Thread: Fire explosion while bow drilling

Default Fire explosion while bow drilling

Have you seen this video where the guy uses a bow drill for making fire, he uses birch bark and then, while using it, it gets hot and literally explodes.

How can this be possible? Did anyone who used this technique experienced an explosion before? Did it ever took on fire while drilling?

    Amazing video anyway...

The cutaway editing is the give away. Anybody can sprinkle a little black powder into a bowdrill divot when the camera isn't running.

I didn't bother looking for it, but just because it's on You tube doesn't make it true.

    Found this video...

    Maybe unrelated.

“There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

I once had that problem. One of my elbows spontaneously burst into flame. That's the last time I ever tried it.

Yeah, unrelated. Blowing a coal to flame is a bit different than what the OP was talking about.

    I am curious alright.

I am wondering how one produces an explosive fire when there is not enough heat in the spindle to produce smoke.

You see, I go to gatherings of folks who have contests doing this sort of thing and after seeing thousands of friction and flint and steel fires produced I have never seen the effect shown in the film unless there were chemicals or other additives involved in the process.

Even using the magic bark, most people have great difficulty getting a workable coal and they will spend a lifetime vainly attempting to replicate what they see here.

It is very deceptive and creates a false expectation.

Well I haven't seen thousands of attempts but I just can't buy it. I know I've sawed on BD rigs enough to have a pretty good idea.

There's as much bull crap in that video as in the video of the guy using an orange for friction fire. Notice how he had to wipe the lighter fluid off his stick. I still shake my head with the thought that there are a lot of people blistering their hands trying to replicate this.

Just because its on the internet, does not make it real.
