    Shrub with spiny grooved braches. alternate leaves that usually grow in clusters. Finely toothed leaves. Berries hang in clusters and are shiny red when ripe EDIBLE-berries have a tart taste, are used for pickling or preserving.. a few berries make a tasty trailside snack... Native Americans used to chew a few leaves to relieve thirst. MEDICINAL- Berries are a mild laxative when eaten in quantity... also are cooling, once used in Egypt to reduce fevers...Stem, Bark, and RootBark are antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and improve liver action, they are used to treat gallstones and liver problems, even those stemming from alcohol abuse. Stem Bark dillates blood vessels. REMARK- Barberries should be avoided while pregnant
